Last night, I was proud of McCain for the first time in this election. Too bad that his audience booed Obama but maybe by the end a few of them were moved by their candidate lining up behind Obama and calling him “my President.” I still have some lingering dread about what if “that” McCain had run with a moderate/qualified woman. He may made a different speech last night.

McCain… it’s like, he has a moral compass, but when the going gets tough he’s not morally strong enough to stick by it. I think he’s a decent person at his core who was somewhat sickened by his own campaign, but he wasn’t strong enough (or frankly smart enough) to do things the right way. It’s like when he joked about Janet Reno being Chelsea’s father, for yuks at a horrible republican fundraiser. He can’t help but play to the worst instincts of others when it’s good for him, even though he seems to know better. I’m sure there’s a psychological profile name for this behavior.
Joel must be having some post-victory hallucinations. McCain was trying to salvage his career, the Dems are in charge, if he wants his calls returned he needs to do this. If he had tried a moderate approach in the campaign he would lose the base and lost anyway.
I watched this again and would love to know if McCain wrote this himself. It is a remarkable speech especially considering the context. I hope that McCain stays active in the Senate and works with President Obama in a sincere way.

I used to like McCain, he seems rattled now. Do you think that the Senate Rs will accept him back as part of the club given that he just tanked the party?
